“Spatulas up!” announced Kyle Cherek of Wisconsin Foodie and master of ceremony at the annual Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championship on Sunday, April 27. It was time for the chefs to stop cooking, step away from the hot plates and let the judges do their work.
Sponsored by the Dodgeville Area Chamber of Commerce for the third year and sponsored in part by Lands’ End, the contest invites amateur and professional chefs from around the state to test their grilled cheese-making skills using ingredients from marzipan to jalapenos. The crowd hungrily watched the chefs compete in classic to dessert categories.
Bob, one of the judges, offered how he chooses a winner, “Presentation is very important, and I think a good, tasty bread.”
So, part cooking. Part artwork. Contestants ranged from the purist who kept it basic (cheese, bread, butter) to the more adventurous (armed with chef torches and maple syrup). The results were simply delicious.
If you missed this year’s competition, next year’s date is April 18th. Or send your recipes to The Wisconsin Milk Board through May 12th for their grilled cheese competition.
