Who knew a spur of the moment idea would become a family tradition? This story begins in Madison, Wisconsin way back in early December of 1995 with a special detour at the end of a date just a couple weeks into our relationship. Sensing how much I loved Christmas, my now husband took me to see the lighted displays known as the Holiday Fantasy in Lights. Two years later, what I thought was an impromptu trip back to see the lights turned out to be part of an elaborate plan. Somewhere between the Packers helmet and golfing Santa, my husband proposed. (You can bet the sentimentalist in me saw annual tradition written all over this now!)
We have since added 3 kids to the mix and every year during the Christmas season, we pick a special night to drive through Olin Park to see the latest electric creations. The kids snuggle into their PJs and slippers, and on the ride there’s chatter about which of their favorites will be there again, what will the new ones be and how they can’t wait for the candy cane handed out as you exit the park.
Now in its 25th season, this year’s Holiday Fantasy in Lights features over 50 spectacular displays – an all time high! They will be illuminating Olin Park until New Year’s Eve. The puppy wagging its tail was one of our favorites this year. What’s yours?
