TELL ME YOUR RESCUE STORY:
Last year, I was poking around on Petfinder, just kind of dreaming about getting a dog when I stumbled across this gorgeous hound named Betsy. When I inquired after her, I learned that she was in Tennessee and had recently wandered up to a house, pregnant and about to give birth. The woman who lived in that house let her inside to have her puppies but after a little while, she didn’t want them anymore. She was about to take them to the shelter, which in the south could be a death sentence as many of them are 24-hour shelters. That’s when a woman named Ruthie heard about their predicament and volunteered to take them all! She fostered all of them until her babies were weaned and ready to be adopted. Slowly but surely all of my “grand puppies” were adopted out and soon after, I emailed Ruthie about this dog I had seen online. Thankfully she was still available (I had already imagined our entire lives together) and a week later, she got on the puppy bus heading north.
When I picked her up, she crawled right into my lap like she just knew it was going to be forever. She had been through so much in the last few months and I had been so excited to get her, we just had a nice cry together, knowing we had finally found each other. As soon as I saw her though, I knew she wasn’t a Betsy. She’s my little Monkey and I’ve never called her anything else. We left Betsy behind in Tennessee.
No one knows what her life was like before she showed up at that house but whatever it was, I can’t imagine it was good. Her true rescuer was Ruthie, not me. She saved all of those dogs from the shelter and I am forever grateful. She gave me my Monkey and my life is better every day because of her.
WHAT’S HER FAVORITE THING TO DO? Roll in the grass and get whatever smells the worst all over her body. She loves it so much she makes this snarfing noise of joy while doing it.
SHE ALWAYS GETS IN TROUBLE FOR…biting at her dry/itchy skin. She’s getting bald patches and I try to tell her that it isn’t going to grow back!
MONKEY IS SO SPOILED…when I get out of bed in the mornings, she moves from her side to my side and then gets tucked back in under the covers for another hour of sleep before we go outside. I’ve created a monster!
