The Voice On The Other End

One of Gary Comer’s principles of doing business was this simple ideal:

Take care of the customer and the rest will take of itself.

We strive to live up to it every day. And we’re proud to introduce you to some of the amazing people who best embody this spirit.

Name: Jan J.

How long have you worked for Lands’ End and when did you start?

I started in the fall of 1981 and have been here for 32 years.

Current job at Lands’ End:

Online Customer Care Specialist.

Any other current jobs:

I also publish the Ecatalogs

Where do you live and how long have you lived there?

I live on a farm in the Dodgeville area and have lived there for 37 years.

Where are you from originally?

Illinois. My family moved to Wisconsin when I was in the 3rd grade.

What brought you to Lands’ End?

We were farming at a time when milk prices where low and we needed to add to our income. Lands’ End was the perfect fit as I could work 3rd shift so someone was always home with our kids.

What do you like most about your job?

Definitely the people, both customers and the people I work with. I like helping people and finding solutions if needed.
What’s the most unusual customer question or request you’ve ever received?

That would be the customer who asked me to marry him when I was helping him in a chat. I told him I was already married but thanked him for the offer.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to quilt and give the finished quilts to my friends and family. LOL…we only have one quilt in our house that I made for my husband as I give them away as soon as they are done. I also love to travel to see our family as well as read.

What’s your favorite Lands’ End memory?

That would be the blizzard we had in winter of 1983. We had more snow than you can imagine and lots of our folks could not come in. The phones were crazy and lots of customers were on hold waiting to place their orders. Those that could get in worked from 10-14 hours taking calls. Gary Comer came around and handed out sandwiches and drinks to everyone working. It was incredible seeing how such a small company came together to make it work.

Favorite place to go for vacation:

Charleston, SC.

Who’s your hero?

Red Skelton. He always remembered where he came from and when he was touring would stand outside the Kmart stores in the area his show was at and shake the hands of people who where coming/leaving the store.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be or do when you grew up?

Dale Evans. She got to ride as well as helped Roy Rogers get the bad guys.

If you could do it all over again, what if anything would you do differently?

I would travel more and go back to school, I think.

Do you have any advice or words of wisdom you’d like to share?

Live each day like it is the best one you have as no one knows what tomorrow will bring.

Who’s the most famous person you know or have ever met?

Eleanor Burns. She is a famous quilter and really had to overcome some difficulties to get where she is today.

What item of Lands’ End clothing in your closet is your favorite, and why?

I would say the Women’s Elbow Sleeve Modal Pleated Neck Scoop top. It washes great and looks wonderful with jeans or dress pants.
